This week I’ve made a few changes behind the scenes to “dana blogs chess,” which I hope will be mostly invisible to readers. As part of a re-design of my whole website, I’ve moved “dana blogs chess” to a new server and updated the version of WordPress from the prehistoric version 2.1 to the current version 3.3.1.
This should enable me to take advantage of more up-to-date plug-ins, if I should decide to do so. For example, I’ve added a new “Print Friendly” plug-in that should make it easy to print individual posts … and just the posts, without all the extra stuff that used to come along with them. Please try it out by clicking on the “Print” icon and let me know what you think.
I don’t intend to look for lots of other plugins, because my goal isn’t to impress readers with bells and whistles. But if you have suggestions for improving the look or functionality of the site, please let me know. (For instance, a number of you urged me for a long time to use a PGN game viewer in my posts. I finally started doing that recently, it worked great, and it didn’t even require a plug-in.)
The only other change I’ve noticed as a result of the upgrade is that the new WordPress doesn’t seem to recognize non-standard characters such as ã or é that were created in the old WordPress editor. I apologize for that inconvenience.
In my next post, I’ll get back to chess. This weekend I’m going to Reno for the 1st annual Larry Evans Memorial tournament (which used to be the Far West Open). I’m sure to blog at least once or twice from the tournament. Stay tuned!

FYI – The chess diagrams are not showing up for me. I get a bunch of squares with a red X in each one. The PGN chessboards are showing up. I’m using Internet Explorer to view your blog.

Thanks for alerting me to the problem. I can see that about 2/3 of the images in my media library do not display. Some of the images do display, and as far as I can tell there is no rhyme or reason behind it.
I’ve sent an e-mail to the tech support at my ISP to see if they can tell me what is going on. From what they’ve told me already, this upgrade is not just a matter of moving files from one place to another. There are also file paths that have to be updated, and apparently it takes the server a while (like 24-48 hours) to “propagate” all the changes. It sounds almost like a human brain waking up from a coma or a concussion.
I’m hoping that is what is causing the problem, and that the machine itself will bring more and more of the images back online. If not, then I face the unenviable task of re-uploading most of my image library (which contains 879 images!). I hope that I can avoid that.
Cutting and pasting from notengoenie.com is a quick way to “type” non-standard characters.
FYI, I can now see the diagrams, so it looks like your technical support advisor was correct.
